About Us

OUR MISSION

To host various on-going non-profit events to help raise awareness of the critical needs that exist within our communities, and to inspire and motivate others to act by contributing their time, initiative and efforts for the well-being of those who are living in less than fortunate conditions.

We hope that others will become compelled to help those that are less fortunate not only with their financial resources, but also their time spent in community activities with purposeful action. Our organization will network with local charities, homeless shelters, battered women shelters, orphanages, and other important community service providers in order to spread this beautiful mission.

With this consistent cycle of giving and assisting, not only with finances, but also with physical acts of community service those in need will receive their share of the benefit from the efforts of K.E.Y.S for the Less Fortunate, God Willing.

"Whosoever alleviates the lot of a needy person, God will alleviate his lot in this world and the next."

Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him.

K.E.Y.S For The Less Fortunate is not only about raising money or supplying food for those in need. Our Initiative is about creating real change and real support for those needing any type of moral assistance. Anyone can feed a person, give money or put a roof over someone's head, but not everyone is willing and ready to build relationships with those whom they are giving assistance to.

K.E.Y.S For The Less Fortunate will strive to be a relationship based community service initiative; to create change within the social and economic system; tackling the issues of poverty, orphan life, the mentally and physically abused; putting names to faces, giving a listening ear, showing concern and giving hope to the helpless.

Building a healthy community is about building together, working hand and hand; taking one or many purposeful thoughts and translating them into a set of calculated/strategic actions that will benefit many that do not have a voice to cry out for help. Or to help those who are crying out to be heard and assisted. K.E.Y.S For The Less Fortunate is an initiative of purposeful collective community concern and action.

OUR PURPOSE

As humans we are all one huge family with a shared lineage that began with Adam and Eve. Even though we may all have different beliefs, belonging to different faiths and denominations, we as a human family must come together to help those who need assistance.

We better our persons through bettering others, which advances society, and those who are helped often seek to repay such efforts by striving to help themselves, as well as others once they are capable.

In our faith of Islam, our beloved Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, said.

"Take advantage of five matters before five other matters occur; Your youth before you become old; your health before you become sick; your richness before you become poor; your free time before you become busy; and your life before your death."

K.E.Y.S For The Less Fortunate is a humbling effort to implement that advice and make positive use of our lives for the sake of being in the service of God. This is character, this is integrity, this is love, kindness and dignity; this is truly what being Muslim is about.

They fed the needy, the orphans and the captives for the love of God alone, saying, "We're feeding you only for God's sake, and we expect nothing in return from you, neither compensation nor thanks."

Qur'an 76:8-9

God, the Glorified, has fixed the livelihood of the destitute in the wealth of the rich. Consequently, whenever a destitute remains hungry it is because some rich persons have denied him his share."

Imam Ali Amir-ul-Mu'mineen

Charity is prescribed for each descendant of Adam every day the sun rises." He was then asked:

"From what do we give charity every day?" The Prophet answered:

"The doors of goodness are many...enjoining good, forbidding evil, removing harm from the road, listening to the deaf, leading the blind, guiding one to the object of his need, hurrying with the strength of one's legs to one in sorrow who is asking for help, and supporting the feeble with the strength of one's arms; all of these are charity prescribed for you." He also said: "Your smile for your brother is charity."

Prophet Muhammad, May peace be upon him.

My Story - Yusuf Abdul-Alim (Rodrick Washington)

Born and raised in a small town called Moncks Corner, SC. I grew up in a modest household with a single hard working mother and two older brothers. Quiet, contemplative, love to laugh and enjoy seeing others happy. In 2011 I made a life changing decision by accepting my faith which is Islam. As hard as it was to announce my acceptance to those I love and deal with the consequences thereof God made the burden easy to deal with. With love my family respected my decision and accepted me regardless. As time passed I've learned much about Islam and its teachings about living a life of purpose. Not only living a life of purpose but a life where that purpose is for the pleasure and friendship of God.

In our Holy Book - The Noble Quran 5:15-16 - He says...

"There has come to you from God a light and a luminous Book, through which God, by His grace, guides all who seek His good pleasure on the path of peace, and brings them out of the depths of darkness into light and guides them unto a Straight Path."

And regarding life in general and ultimately the day of resurrection our Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him stated.

"The son of Adam will not be dismissed from before his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he has been questioned about five things: his life and how he spent it, his youth and how he used it, his wealth and how he earned it and how he disposed of it, and how he acted upon what he acquired of knowledge.”

In a parable he talks about wealth, family and the actions of an individual.

"The likeness of wealth, family and the actions of the son of Adam is of a man who has three companions. One of the man's companions says: I am with you as long as you live; when you die, you have taken your share of yourself and you have taken your share of me - this is his wealth. The second companion says: I am with you until you reach that tree (where u will be buried); you have had your share of yourself and your share of me - this is his family. The third companion says: I am with you in life and in death." (The third companion is all of your actions during the adolescent span of life that you lived.)

The following quote is complimented by the previous one.

"The deceased person is followed (to his grave) by three: His family, his wealth and his actions. Two of them return and only one remains. His family and wealth return, but his actions remain."

Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him.

Growing more in my faith I realized the great importance of living a life of purpose. Living a life that will not just benefit myself but to have an impact on society, leaving a legacy behind that will last even after my death; a legacy that is pleasing to God. Sitting, contemplating and thinking about being of beneficial purpose I decided to create K.E.Y.S For The Less Fortunate to be an initiative that will bring real change to our community. To help the poor, the needy, the orphan and tackle any moral issues that impact our community.

In December of 2016 I had the privilege to travel to the Motherland - Dakar, Senegal West Africa. It was such a very enlightening experience; seeing the generosity and hospitality of a people who are from a third world country that's considered underdeveloped. It is true that some of the most humble of mankind are those who do not have exactly what we in Western Society view as material comfort. Always happy, smiling and doing things together as a family even if you aren't actually related is a trademark in Senegalese culture. Their homes are open to everyone - The stranger is treated as a brother or sister - all elderly are seen as people to be respected and honored and the poor aren't shunned and belittled. It was a great honor and privilege to witness all that I've seen. I am happy that I've also found a wife from there who has those core-values cultivated in her lifestyle.

After my return to America a great unforeseen test was placed upon me and my family. On Friday, February 3rd 2017, one of my older brothers took their own life. What made it even more difficult was the fact that I was the one who found him in his lifeless state; I was unsuccessful at trying to revive him and it was a total shock seeing him unresponsive. I was in denial that I was looking at him and he's actually gone. The final thing that made it harder was ultimately having to tell my mother that he was no longer with us.  This was by far the hardest thing I have ever dealt with in my life but I thank God He helped me to be as strong as I could throughout the early stages of this unthinkable loss.

A part of the K.E.Y.S Initiative is to bring awareness to mental illness, mental and physical abuse; awareness of the problems and issues that may lead people to take their own lives as well as striving hard to prevent that type of action from happening. I am a firm believer that all things in life are solved by the knowledge God revealed to us through His Revelation.  All problems that affect the human being in all aspects of life can be cured by the Wisdom and Instruction directed by God. I pray that K.E.Y.S For The Less Fortunate brings a lasting positive impact on society especially spiritually, while tackling and fixing a multitude of issues we all face as human beings. I also hope to have many people assist in making this initiative successful. My faith in God is my motivation and I hope to motivate others to take the path of purposeful living for God as well.
